Plastics which were produced from fossil fuels are just over a century old, but they have revolutionized our life completely. The great advantages plastic offered led to a throwaway trend that made us discover plastic’s dark side: the threat it poses to our environment and life. Plastic pollution is one of the main causes of marine species extinction, health problems for human beings and animals alike, and the destruction of our ecosystems. According to Greenpeace, more than 100,000 sea creatures and a million sea birds die every year after eating plastic or getting trapped in plastic rubbish. Every year, the world produces more than 380 million tonnes of plastic. In the next second while you’re reading this paragraph, people around the globe will use more than 160,000 plastic bags and they’ll throw away more than 20,000 plastic bottles. About 10% of plastic will be recycled, and some will go to landfills, but a lot of it will end up in the waterways and eventually in the ocean. Experts estimate that there are already 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste in the world’s oceans. Because plastic isn’t biodegradable, it won’t decompose naturally, so all the plastic that we have now in the world will exist forever. Experts are warning that if we don’t take urgent action, plastics in the ocean will outweigh fish by 2050. There are many ways we can do to keep plastic out of the ocean. We can swap plastic bags for reusable ones which are made of cloth or fiber, reduce the use of disposable cutlery as well as food containers, and avoid plastic wrappings if possible. Andy: You went to Madagascar, right? Did you see lots of wildlife there? Laura: Of course. In fact, I went there to help the wildlife. Andy: What do you mean? Laura: It was an eco-holiday. I was there to help clean up the environment and protect the wildlife. Andy: That sounds interesting. Laura: It was incredible. Sadly, we have a lot of environmental problems on our planet today and in Madagascar, they have problems too. The main problem is that their forests are becoming smaller, so animals are losing their homes. Plastic pollution is another problem, and some species are in danger for other reasons too. Andy: What did you do to help? Laura: Well, I picked up rubbish on the beaches and I planted trees. I also helped to protect the nesting grounds of the turtles. That was definitely my favourite task. Andy: Wow! Was it expensive? Laura: Well, it wasn’t cheap because it is far away, but I don’t think it cost much more than a luxury holiday. The difference is that the money helps the local people, so it’s well worth it. Task 2: Interviewer: Welcome to the show. With us is Dr Wallace, a marine biologist studying cod populations in the British Isles. Welcome. So why are our fish in danger? Dr Wallace: Quite simply because the number of cod in the waters is very low. In fact, the level of North Sea cod stocks has fallen 31% since 2015. Interviewer: What’s the cause? Is it a result of pollution? Dr Wallace: Actually, it’s overfishing. Some places, such as Canada, have banned cod fishing already because of this. However, people still overfish cod in Europe and other parts of the world. Interviewer: That’s terrible, I didn’t know that my fish and chip dinner put ocean life at risk. Dr Wallace: Believe it or not, British people eat around 115,000 tonnes of cod every year! This amount doesn’t just come from the North Sea either. Fishermen catch 15,000 tonnes there with the rest coming from other places. Interviewer: So, what can we do? Dr Wallace: Simple. Try something different. Instead of cod, buy hake. Personally, I prefer it and it is cheap too.
  9. Interviewer: Well Dr Wallace, thank you for joining us. You’ve certainly given us all plenty of ‘food for thought!’
