Form (Cấu trúc) I, She, He, It + was - Affirmative form (Thể khẳng định) + V-ing We, You, They + were Ex: I was watching TV at nine o’clock - Negative form: (Thểphủ định) S + was / were + not + V-ing Ex: they weren’t doing their homework at that time. - Interrogative form: (Thể nghi vấn) Was / Were + S + V-ing ? Ex: Were you playing soccer at eight o’clock ? b. Usage: (Cách dùng) Thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn được dùng để diễn tả: • Hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ. Ex: Nga was practising the piano at 7 p.m last Sunday. What were you doing at this time yesterday ? • Hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài trong một khỏang thời gian xác định trong quá khứ. Ex: I was painting all day yesterday. They were playing tennis from 8 a.m to 10 a.m last Saturday. • Một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ thì một hành động quá khứ khác xảy đến (hai hành động này thường được nối liền bằng liên từ when hoặc while ) Ex: We were having dinner when he came yesterday. I saw her while I was crossing the road. • Hai hay nhiều hành động xảy ra song song trong quá khứ (thường được nối bằng liên từ while) Ex: The children were playing outside while their mother was cooking dinner. Lưu ý: Liên từ when (khi, thì), while (trong khi) được dùng để nối hai mệnh đề. Khi when, while được đặt ở đầu câu, giữa hai mệnh đề phải có dấu phẩy (,) 2.
